Yoyogi National Gymnasium
Tokyo, Japan · 1964 · Modern Architecture
Kenzō Tange designed this gymnasium for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, hanging its roof from cables strung between concrete masts so the surfaces sweep down in dramatic curves. The tensioned roof gives the arena a column-free interior and an unmistakable silhouette in Shibuya.
