Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex – Shaft XII
Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany · Industrial Architecture
Architectural reference — not an AmericanStruct project. A well-known building shown for inspiration. Facts marked “Wikidata” are taken from Wikidata; photographs are credited below and used under their licences.
The Zollverein complex in Essen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its red steel double-trestle winding tower over Shaft XII has become the emblem of the Ruhr's industrial past. The headframe rises above cubic brick-and-steel buildings with a strict, geometric composition. The wider complex dates back to a coal mine established in the mid-19th century.
