Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's house in Plano, Illinois, completed in 1951, reduces a dwelling to a single glass room held between two white steel-framed planes. The floor slab is lifted above the meadow on slender columns, and a separate open terrace steps down to the lawn, so the house seems to hover in the landscape. It is now a National Historic Landmark.
